It’s the little things…

StormWoke up this morning to a nice tropical downpour. Note in the picture the distinct section of brown water that I believe is sand being churned up by the waves.

The storm did not abate until a little before halftime of the U.S.A.’s defeat to Germany but that was still good enough to send them through to the round of sixteen where they’ll face Belgium at Arena Fonte Nova and I will be there!

Besides that there’s nothing really to report so here are few of the little things that make Brazil different:

In the stadium, the wave goes anti-clockwise south of the equator.

Drivers do not yield to pedestrians. I got hit in the butt the other day by a passenger side mirror. Fortunately, the car was traveling at a relatively low speed so my butt was not damaged.

Speaking of butts, when one wipes oneself, one does not flush the toilet paper. Apparently that clogs up the pipes. Instead, next to the toilet there’s a little trash can where one puts the used toilet paper and then that gets taken out with the rest of the trash. This is the only part of Brazilian life causing me problems. I prefer the Japanese toilet systems I encountered back in 2002 which clean with warm water and then dry you with a little fan. Much more civilized.

Is there a beach to speak of? I know you went to the light house. I know it isn’t sun bathing weather, but with all the people around, I’d expect to see some beach photos.

You were hit by a car? :( Were you on a sidewalk?

    • I was almost on the sidewalk. The incident was so minor that I didn’t even include it in Wednesday posting. I will claim that my firm well defined buttocks caused the mirror to fold in on impact but I honestly don’t know.

I definitely agree with you about Japanese toilet systems. That is one of the things going into my bathroom as we finish renovating it. Something like $500.00 and worth every penny.
